What Is Shea Butter?
Shea butter is a wonder food for the skin that is obtained from the seeds of the Shea (Karite) fruit. Among its potential benefits are providing mild UV protection (up to SPF ~6) and supplying the fatty acids and nutrients that are essential for collagen production.
Over the years, in Africa and other areas, Shea Butter has been used to enhance not only the skin, but also the hair. Furthermore, it has a long record of medicinal applications, such as in the treatment of leprosy and as a salve for wounds.
Similar to the use of palm oil in our food, Shea is a common ingredient in the African region. There have been varied standpoints on the health interest of doing so, as research points to its hindering effect on the digestion of other proteins. I thereby solely put it to external use.
